Roccascalegna Observatory, Abruzzo Italy

A proposal for a new observatory in the ruined Italian fortress of Roccascalegna, comprising night- sky observation facilities and accommodation ranging from simple camping cabins to a luxury villa.

Designed to enhance the pilgrimage-like visitor experience, the proposed design defines a new visitor route that follows a narrative on the theme of stargazing and allows visitors to experience the fortress in a new way through opening up previously inaccessible routes.

The proposal also seeks to touch the existing ruins as lightly as possible and minimise its environmental impact through the use of lightweight construction methods and sustainable materials such as timber.

The design process was as layered as the response to the site.
